Wildcats close on Newton signing

Wakefield are close to signing hooker Terry Newton following Bradford's decision to release him this winter.

The former Great Britain international, 30, failed to win a two-year contract extension with the Bulls.

"We'd love to secure his services and with any luck we will do. He's obviously a gifted player," said Wakefield coach John Kear.

"Bradford made Terry an offer and obviously the length of the contract was an issue with him."

Newton has made 92 appearances and scored 27 tries for the Bulls since his move from Wigan in 2006.

Bulls chairman Peter Hood said Newton had given "outstanding service".

But he added: "We were prepared to consider a one-year contract extension but Terry wanted the security that a two-year deal would offer him."

Newton said: "I am sad to leave but at this stage of my career I feel I need the security of a two-year contract for my future and that of my family."

The likely arrival of Newton would raise questions over the future of Brad Drew, who is out of contract and has been linked to Super League neighbours Castleford.
