Huddersfield Giants back-row forward Stephen Wild is relishing the competition the arrival of Lee Gilmour will bring to the club.
Gilmour will move from St Helens next season and will go head-to-head with Wild for a place in the team.
"I look at it as more competition and the key is the club are looking to bring in top quality," wild told BBC Radio Leeds.
"Everyone will have their role over a season with loss of form and injuries."
Gilmour, 31, will move to the Galpharm Stadium on a two-year deal at the end of the 2009 season.
He will compete with Wild, who has been a major force in the Giants charge to third in Super League thanks to his 19 appearances and four tries.
Wild added: "Nathan [Brown - head coach] is looking at it as added competition and he wants us all to step up our game to earn that shirt.
"He will be looking at us to step up our game to keep Lee out and be looking at Lee to prove he deserves to knock one of us out of our positions.
"Nathan said when he first arrived that it doesn't matter how old you are, what you've won or if you are a Great Britain international as long as you do a job for him you'll be in the side.
"That's shown with a lot of the young lads that have come through the ranks this season."
