Wellens was appointed joint captain along with James Graham |
St Helens joint captain Paul Wellens says the side's recent wins have been built on improved defensive displays. Since a 27-16 defeat to Harlequins on 11 March, the Saints have recorded victories over Leeds and Bradford. "We're taking pride in our defence and we feel strong that we can defend our line," a delighted Wellens told BBC Radio Merseyside. "When you have a solid defensive foundation, the rest will come off the back of it." Wellens has scored three tries for St Helens this season, adding two in the 27-16 win over Bradford on Friday. The victory was also the Saints' first victory at Widnes's Halton Stadium, their temporary home for the season. "I broke my duck last week for the season and bagged another couple against Bradford," continued Wellens. "It's always nice to score tries and more importantly we want the team to do well. "I'm pleased we've got our first home victory of the season and I'm pleased we could back up last week's good performance."
