Gus Mackay has swapped sports from cricket to become chief executive of Super League club Harlequins. The former Zimbabwe international cricketer will replace Paul Blanchard, who is to take up a similar role at a Surrey leisure centre. Mackay, 43, who cut his teeth in county cricket as Leicestershire operations manager, became chief executive with Sussex in 2006. He then moved to The Oval to become managing director of Surrey in 2008. Mackay, who played in three one-day internationals for his country, made his first-class debut in 1998. "I am looking forward to joining Harlequins," said Mackay. "I am aware of the significant challenges which we face with this sport in London. | Gus Mackay's appointment is not only positive for this club, but also good news for the continued growth and development of rugby league in London Harlequins chairman David Hughes |
"However, I am confident that we can make a real impact and build on the good work and strong base which exists." Harlequins RL chairman David Hughes said: "Gus has enjoyed considerable success in professional sport over a number of years. "His appointment is not only positive for this club, but also good news for the continued growth and development of rugby league in London."
