Harlequins have signed Leeds Rhinos and Ireland prop Luke Ambler on a one-year loan deal.

The 20-year-old, who signed a two-year contract extension at Rhinos in July, began his career at Salford City Reds before arriving at Leeds in 2008.

Since then he has made nine Super League starts, scoring one try.

Quins acting head coach Rob Powell said: "He's a strong ball carrier who will add size to our pack and is keen to push for the first team in 2011."

Ambler follows Leeds' Ben Jones-Bishop, Carl Ablett and Luke Burgess in spending time on loan at Quins, and new Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott said the move would improve his game.

"I think over the years, the club have realised that those players who go away to Quins come back better players and better people from the experience," former Quins boss McDermott said.

"That is certainly what we will be looking for from Luke."

Powell added: "We're grateful to Leeds for sending Luke down to join us for next season and we hope the relationship between the two clubs can continue.

"Luke is a talented, young player who is enthusiastic about coming down and starting training next week. "
