Rhinos sign Salford prop Ambler

Leeds

Leeds Rhinos have signed young prop Luke Ambler from their Super League rivals Salford City Reds.

The 18-year-old has joined the Rhinos on a two-year contract after the two clubs agreed a 12,000 fee for the former Elland amateur.

Head coach Brian McClennan said: "Luke is a young prop who will develop well in our system alongside senior players like Jamie Peacock and Kylie Leuluai.

"This is a good opportunity for him to develop his game."

He added: "He will supplement our first-team squad as well as working with Willie Poching in the reserve academy squad.

"We are looking forward to seeing him come through the system over the next few years and hopefully with hard work that will happen."

Ambler will get his first taste of action for the Rhinos in the traditional Boxing Day fixture against Wakefield.

He has been training with the first team squad in pre-season and said: "I am very pleased to be joining the Rhinos. I have spent the last three years at Salford but only played one game in the first team.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity of working hard and progressing here at Leeds.

"I know guys like Paul McShane and Chris Clarkson from the Yorkshire squad and Jamie Peacock was one of my idols when I was growing up and watching games.

"Hopefully, I can repay the faith the club have shown in signing me. I know Leeds have a tradition of promoting young players so the opportunity is there for me."
