Former Hull FC chairman David Kirkwood has died, the club has announced.

Mr Kirkwood sat on the Hull board during the 1980s, becoming chairman for one season in 1990/91.

Hull chief executive James Rule said: "We have all been devastated by the news of the passing of David, who was a passionate supporter of the club."

He left the board in 1992 but remained an active supporter of the club before being invited to be chairman once again in 1999.

Mr Kirkwood was named President of the club following its merger with Gateshead the following year.

Rule added: "David had a long affinity with Hull FC, he was a dedicated servant to the club, and he will be sorely missed."
