Matterson has been in charge of Castleford since 2005 |
Castleford Tigers coach Terry Matterson says he is recovering after losing a finger in a training-ground incident. The Australian's wedding ring caught on a fence as he jumped it to retrieve a ball during training in Perpignan. The 42-year-old was rushed to hospital and detained overnight but was back at the helm for the Tigers' 14-12 win over Catalans Dragons. "We didn't elaborate last week, we were in camp and decided not to make too big a statement until I got back," he said. Matterson did not immediately realise what had happened and actually retrieved the ball before then realising the situation. However, doctors were unable to sew back on the severed finger during emergency treatment. "The ball was kicked out of the training ground and I went to retrieve it which meant me leaping over a fence. My wedding ring caught in the fencing and tore it off," added Matterson. Matterson arrived back from France with his squad on Sunday and was seeing a specialist on Monday. "Like myself, the players were in shock at the time, but I am very proud of the way they reacted and their performance in the game on Saturday. Andy [Hay] took over and, although not in the circumstances you would expect, it was good experience for him. "I'd also like to thank our physio, Russell Jones, and another of our backroom team, Matty Merrick, for their assistance and I would particularly like to acknowledge the support and help given to me by the people at Catalans, especially Sebastian Munoz."
