Harlequins celebrated Henry Paul's arrival with a nervy victory over Huddersfield at the Twickenham Stoop.

Mark McLinden and David Mills crossed for first-half tries for the hosts, with Stuart Jones replying for Giants.

Paul came on after 34 minutes and missed two kicks before converting Nick Bradley-Qalilawa's second try to put Quins 22-10 up with eight minutes left.

Second-half tries from James Evans and Stuart Donlan, late on, could not stop a fifth straight defeat for the Giants.

  • Harlequins full-back and man-of-the-match Mark McLinden:
"The last couple of minutes felt like about an hour. It was a tough game.

"When you have got opposition that are desperate, like we are, it is always going to go the full 80 minutes.

"It was nervy but it was a big occasion for the Harlequins club (the second part of a double-header following the union side) and there were a few jitters beforehand, which probably showed in some of our errors."

  • New Harlequins arrival Henry Paul:
"I was really nervous beforehand and I am knackered. I trained with the guys yesterday and I was blowing after that, and I am blowing now.

"But I am really happy to get a win in front of a good crowd. They were looking to see if I could still play and I ran as hard as I could. I will find my feet in the next few weeks."

  • Giants coach Jon Sharp:
"That was a massive improvement. A week ago there was absolutely nothing we could take as a positive.

"We spent a lot of time working hard this week and we really came together well after the Wigan defeat.

"Brad Drew really came to the fore and people like Paul March really shouldered the burden. We came a long way in a week and I'm ever so proud."
