Withers brace halts Wigan
Michael Withers
Withers upstaged Radlinski's achievements
Bradford 32-14 Wigan

Michael Withers guaranteed Bradford a top-two finish in the Super League with two tries in a convincing win over Wigan.

The Bulls full-back, who took his tally for the season up to 19 in the process, touched down either side of half-time to build a lead the Warriors failed to reduce.

But it was Wigan who took the initial lead as Kris Radlinski made history by becoming the first player to score 100 Super League tries.

His diagonal run pierced open the opposition defence and touched down virtually unchallenged.

The visitors to Valley Parade were punished from there, referee Steve Ganson clamping down on their constant interference.

That opened the way for Paul Deacon, who was instrumental in the victory, to slot over two early penalties.

Wigan's Julian O'Neill twice hit back for a 8-4 lead before Withers ran across for the first of his two tries.

The Bulls full-back first profited as a Daniel Gardner grubber kick deflected kindly.

And they got another lucky bounce minutes later when a high Robbie Paul kick slipped through the hands of Gary Connolly, enabling Stuart Fielden to pounce.

Radlinski briefly restored some pride, crossing the line for his second try of the night after running on to a superb delayed pass from Adrian Lam.

But from there, the home side began to stamp their authority on the game, Lesley Vainikolo touching down late in the half.

Vainikolo's was the most impressive score of the game, the New Zealand international barging his way past four Wigan defenders en route to the line.

Withers added his second try five minutes after the interval and put the game out of reach when he slipped the tackle of Danny Tickle.

And Bradford thought they had stretched their lead still further before James Lowes' 50th minute effort was ruled out by the video referee.

During the final half-hour, it fizzled out as a contest, neither side able to break the deadlock aside from two further Deacon penalties.
