Salford earn vital win
Salford coach Karl Harrison
Karl Harrison said his side were "outstanding"
Warrington 2-22 Salford

Salford moved off the bottom of the Super League table with a vital win over Warrington.

Alan Hunte was the hero as he scored two tries, the clincher coming when he intercepted a Lee Briers kick and sprinted the full length of the pitch with 10 minutes to go.

Jason Nicol went over in between Hunte's two scores, and Greg Ebrill added a further try with two minutes to go.

The Reds put in a magnificent defensive performance, and were unrecognisable from the team which had gone nine games without a win.

The win puts Salford one point ahead of Wakefield, who play Halifax on Sunday.

Whatever happens, the relegation picture will be completed in the last round of games next week.

"We played real tough football tonight," said Salford coach Karl Harrison.

"We played real smart and we live to fight another day.

"We put pressure on Wakefield and defensively we were outstanding.

"No tries against is an outstanding achievement for any football team."

Hunte's first try came after 14 minutes after build-up play from Damian Gibson, Ian Watson and Steve Blakeley.

Blakeley added the conversion before Warrington captain Lee Briers notched a penalty after failing with two earlier attempts.

But Watson and Mike Wainwright set up the impressive Nicol, whose converted try gave Salford a 12-2 lead at the break.

Both sides had a try disallowed in a tense second half before Hunte settled matters with his solo run.

Ebrill's late score also came after some fine individual play.

Malcolm Alker was named man of the match and he said he was now hopeful of avoiding relegation.

"We said before the game it was going to be the biggest game of the year.

"It gives us that confidence to go into the next game because we've not had a win in I don't know how long."
