Anderson takes on Halifax
Steve Linnane
Linnane was ousted after a 64-0 defeat to St Helens
Super League strugglers Halifax unveiled former player Tony Anderson as their new coach on Monday.

The 38-year-old Australian replaces Steve Linnane, who was sacked on Saturday following Friday's 64-0 defeat by St Helens.

Anderson, until now assistant to Shaun McRae at high-flying Hull, faces an early test in next week's encounter with fellow relegation battlers Warrington.

"I probably let my heart rule my head by jumping straight in here," Anderson told a news conference at The Shay.

"But it was always my ambition to come back and coach the club and I may never have had the chance again.

"It's an absolute massive gamble but I've got confidence in my ability and confidence in the people running the club.

"We will be playing Super League rugby here next year."

Anderson played for both Halifax and Bradford in the 1980s before moving into coaching and taking up roles with Huddersfield, Gateshead and latterly Hull.

The Blue Sox have won just one of their last 11 matches, and currently lie ninth, just three points off the bottom.

Super League sackings

Linnane, however, expressed disappointment over his dismissal and hinted at possible legal action.

"I'm disappointed with the whole situation but I can't say any more. It's a delicate situation and it's now in the hands of my legal people," said Linnane.

"I love rugby league and I believe I am a good rugby league coach. Hopefully one day I will be back coaching at the highest level again."

All four relegation candidates have now sacked their coaches this season.

Salford terminated the contract of Steve McCormack in May, Wakefield dismissed Roe in July and Warrington have parted company with both Steve Anderson and David Plange.
