St Helens end Broncos bid
Chris Joynt
Chris Joynt's try sparked St Helens' revival
St Helens 22-14 London Broncos

St Helens' second-half comeback put paid to London Broncos' hopes of a Super League double over the Saints.

The Broncos beat St Helens 40-6 at Brentford and looked set for another victory when they led 8-6 until the hour.

We looked a bit rusty at times but I was pleased with our defence
St Helens coach
Ian Millward

Saints then stepped on the gas to keep on the tails of Bradford Bulls at the top of the Super League.

London went ahead on the half hour when Denis Moran intercepted Paul Sculthorpe's pass to race 25 yards and score, with Tony Martin landing the conversion.

It was a disappointing first-half performance by Saints but they went up a gear after the interval.

Saints drew level when Barry Ward sent Chris Joynt over, with the impressive Sculthorpe adding the conversion.

Martin missed a simple penalty in front of the posts before making no mistake five minutes later to edge the Broncos ahead 8-6.

I cannot fault my side's character - we have a strong backbone and will be a real danger if we can keep the ball in our hands
Broncos coach Tony Rea

Two tries in three minutes stunned London, with Sean Long making his comeback after a 10-match injury absence to supply the pass for Martin Gleeson to go over, with Sculthorpe's goal making it 12-8.

Then Sculthorpe engineered a try for Darren Albert before Tommy Martyn wrapped up the win.

Moran put Michael Gillett over six minutes from time for the London's second try.

St Helens: Stewart, Albert, Gleeson, Newlove, Hoppe, Martyn, Long, Britt, Higham, Shiels, Stankevitch, Joynt, Sculthorpe. Replacements: Ward, Bennett, Nickle, Gardner.

London: Sykes, Hall, Martin, Roy, Peters, Gillett, Moran, Bawden, Budworth, Shaw, Retchless, Price, Toshack. Replacements: Marshall, Stephenson, Houles, Dean.

Referee: Karl Kirkpatrick (Warrington).
