Jones has been building up his fitness with the Catalans |
Catalans Dragons will begrudgingly release captain Stacey Jones to play for New Zealand in their Test against Great Britain at St Helens on 27 June. Coach Brian McClennan has named the 30-year-old Jones in his 22-strong squad and is expected to make him captain in the absence of Ruben Wiki.
Jones is three weeks into a comeback from a broken arm after 13 weeks out.
"The club would prefer that Stacey did not play in this Test match," said Catalans chief executive Grant Mayer.
"It is our belief that three games in eight days is simply not a smart way of managing one of your club's greatest assets."
Catalans have home Super League games against Harlequins (24 June) and Hull (1 July) either side of the Test match at Knowsley Road.
"As we are living proof that we are supporters of developing the international game, we certainly understand how important this game is for international rugby league," Mayer added.
"At the end of the day, if the player knocks on my door and says he wants to play in the game, we will not stop him."
The New Zealand team will largely comprise English-based Kiwis.
But Jones, who joined the French Super League newcomers after playing a leading role in November's stunning Tri-Nations Series triumph, is seen as an integral part of their plans for their title defence this autumn.
Jones recently suggested the mid-season international may come too soon in his comeback and Mayer said the final decision would rest with the player.
New Zealand also have another veteran half-back, Robbie Paul, in their squad.
