Carney has made a big impact for Newcastle |
Great Britain winger Brian Carney has been refused permission by Aussie club Newcastle Knights to play in next month's Test against New Zealand. Lions coach Brian Noble was hoping to field Carney, who has scored 10 tries in his first 11 matches for the Knights, at St Helens on 27 June.
But National Rugby League leaders Newcastle said they will not release him because he would miss two games.
Sydney Roosters' GB star Adrian Morley is expected to make the journey home.
The prop, in talks with Sydney about a new contract, discovered earlier this week he had not broken his thumb as had been feared.
However, he is likely to miss the end-of-season Tri-Nations Series because he requires surgery to his left wrist.
