No 5: 1976, St Helens 20-5 Widnes

Ray French selects his top 10 Challenge Cup final shocks.

RAY FRENCH'S TOP SHOCKS

RF: "Widnes, possessing the likes of Reg Bowden, Doug Laughton and Ray Dutton, were expected to retain the trophy they had won the previous year by beating Warrington.

"But an ageing St Helens side dubbed 'Dad's Army' upset the odds, one of their four tries coming from Eddie Cunningham, who went on to help Widnes win the trophy in 1981.

"Kel Coslett lifted the cup for Saints while former rugby union full-back Geoff Pimblett, who kicked six points, collected the Lance Todd Trophy."
