Sheffield success is top shock
Mark Aston
The game and the Lance Todd Trophy made for the most memorable moment of my career
Mark Aston
The Challenge Cup final has witnessed its fair share of upsets down the years.

But top of the pile, according to the BBC's Ray French, is Wigan's demise at the hands of Sheffield in 1998, when the Eagles shrugged off massive odds of 33-1 to defeat the Warriors 17-8.

No one gave John Kear's side a chance but Lance Todd Trophy winner Mark Aston led the underdogs to victory in their first Challenge Cup final.

Eagles chairman Tim Adams had double reason to celebrate, having placed a 1,000 bet on his side to win.

Here, Aston recalls that famous day in an interview with BBC Sport:

"From the first training session of the season, our coach, John Kear, said we could win the Challenge Cup.

"I was just one piece of the jigsaw but John told me that, as captain, I had to be the coach on the field and that I had to make sure that we played to our plan.

"We certainly did that and never wavered from it. We planned to kick high balls to Jason Robinson because of his lack of height.

"And, in the fourth minute, Nick Pinkney caught one of my crossfield kicks to score at the corner.

"We also planned to put long, low kicks along the ground behind their other wing, Mark Bell.

"He was slower on the turn and allowed us to put pressure on Wigan near their line.

RAY FRENCH'S TOP SHOCKS 2-10
"When we eventually reached the final, we were mentally prepared for it.

"Everything worked to perfection for me and I also picked up a drop goal.

"But we had some special players, like Dave Watson and Dale Laughton, who played their part.

"Before kick-off in the tunnel, we were far more relaxed and focused than the Wigan team.

"They appeared to be very tense and conscious of their favourites' tag. In contrast, we were composed and had a belief in ourselves.

"The game and the Lance Todd Trophy made for the most memorable moment of my career.

"And the sheer emotion of the 'no hopers' beating 'the superstars' was unimaginable."
