Dave Woods will replace Jordan Ross as captain after he moved to Australia |
York City Knights could name up to four on-field captains for their forthcoming season in the Championship. Coach Dave Woods told BBC Radio York it is something he has done before and reaped the benefits from. "I like to have one that makes decisions, and then have a left side captain, a right side captain, and a middle captain. "It's something that can be shared around and it just makes it a lot stronger unit," he said. Woods explained that each captain would have a different role. "I'll have one person out there that's an extension of me that will make sure the boys are following directions that I want them to follow and he'll make the decisions on the field when we get penalties and things like that. | We expect all the players to be leaders in their own right and these players will be just that little bit above that and they'll have earned that respect from the other players |
"He'll speak to the players through me with messages. "It just makes it a little bit competitive as well. The left side don't like to allow tries in and they'll be giving it to the right side in training and things like that. "It just puts a little bit more responsibility on other players rather than just one." Woods said he had players in mind for the jobs but he has not officially named anyone yet. "You look for experience and someone that might lead by example. They might not say a lot but they might lead by example. "You look for the talkers, the ones that have got that respect and they've earned that respect from players . "We expect all the players to be leaders in their own right and these players will be just that little bit above that and they'll have earned that respect from the other players. "It's someone other players can go to if they need to go to them and don't want to come to the coaching staff. We've got a lot of players that are there at our ready that we can take and use. "
