Championship round-up - week 10

Championships

Keighley Cougars hit a positive note for the first time in 2010 with a 22-12 win at fellow strugglers Whitehaven.

The Cougars started the season on -9 points after going into administration at the end of last year.

But they finally took their points total to +1 with a hard-fought second league win of the campaign.

And Barry Eaton's team did it the hard way, Ollie Pursglove touching down twice as they fought back from an early 12-0 deficit against the Cumbrians.

Haven opened up an early lead with tries by Josh Veivers and Kurt Wilton, both converted by Carl Rudd.

The visitors closed the gap before the break with a converted try from Daley Williams and assumed full control following the resumption with three more tries.

Pursglove and Gavin Duffy also scored, Danny Jones landing two more goals and seal a celebrated win.

Meanwhile, Championship leaders Featherstone Rovers lost their 100 per cent record as they suffered their first league defeat of season at home to Toulouse.

The French side, 18-10 down at the break, trailed by 14 points when Zak Hardaker scored his second try of the night six minutes into the second half.

But Toulouse ran in two quick tries from Martin Mitchell and Rory Bromley.

Vincent Duport then levelled with just three minutes left, Nathan Wynn holding his nerve for the winning kick.

CHAMPIONSHIP ONE

Stand-off Dale Bloomfield scored two tries at Sedgley Park to helpRochdale to a 33-22 win over Swinton which keeps them in touch with the pacesetters.

Dean Gorton, Danny Samuel, Chris Hough and Craig Johnson were the other try scorers for the visitors, who are now four points behind leaders Hunslet.

Richie Hawkyard, Dana Wilson, Phil Joseph and Rob Foxen scored tries for Swinton, who trailed 20-16 at the break.

In Saturday's evening kick-off, South Wales Scorpions ran up the biggest win in their short existence with a 50-8 win at bottom club Gateshead.

Neil Dallimore and Andrew Gay both scored two tries apiece as the Scorpions, who led 18-4 at half-time, gained the win that lifted them up to fifth place.

In Sunday's games, Oldham were disappointed as their dreams of beginning life at their new Whitebank Stadium home with a victory were dashed byYork City Knights.

The visitors snatched a thrilling late 34-28 win with a last-minute try by Dennis Tuffour.

The scores were locked with just seconds remaining when Tuffour plunged over for his second try of the match, Lee Waterman's fifth goal bringing proceedings to an end.

There was little between the sides in a pulsating game, although York always seemed most likely to emerge victorious after building a 24-16 lead by the interval with tries by Tuffour, Danny Ratcliffe, Steve Lewis and Waterman, who added conversions to all four tries.

Oldham responded with tries by Wayne Kerr, John Gillam and Lucas Onyango, to which Matt Ashe landed two goals.

The dismissal of Kerr on 53 minutes had a massive impact on Oldham and though they added further tries through Paul O'Connor (2) and Mick Fogerty, their cause was lost.

York scored just twice in the second half, Tom Lineham touching down on 61 minutes before Tuffour's late steal won the day.

James Marshall scored a hat-trick of tries for Workington Town as the Cumbrians defied the dismissal of Lee Dutton on 50 minutes to beat London Skolars 44-28.

Scott Kaighan finished the match with 16 points from a try and six goals for Workington, who had fallen 12-0 in arrears in the early exchanges.

Skolars grabbed five tries of their own, including two first half efforts from Jamie Boston, but were always second best.
