Emphatic Widnes Vikings win pleases coach Paul Cullen

Cullen starts his second season in charge of the Vikings

Widnes head coach Paul Cullen was pleased after his side started their defence of the Northern Rail Cup with a 50-6 win over Gateshead on Tuesday.

The Vikings lifted the trophy last season, beating Barrow 34-18.

"It was a decent first half but the second was a little bit scruffy," Cullen told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"At 34-0 at half time the game was done and dusted. But I'm just glad we've been able to get on the field and get a game under our belt."

Cullen said the only down side to the night was his side's wayward goal kicking - a situation he is keen to see resolved.

"We lost a lot of our goal kickers for one reason or another at the back end of last year," continued Cullen.

"Although I think we have made some good signings, none of those signings are accomplished goal kickers in their own right.

"The goal kicks weren't missing by a mile and a lot of them were from the touchline, so we'll plug away at that and try and develop those young players."
