Cullen starts his second season in charge of the Vikings |
Widnes head coach Paul Cullen was pleased after his side started their defence of the Northern Rail Cup with a 50-6 win over Gateshead on Tuesday. The Vikings lifted the trophy last season, beating Barrow 34-18. "It was a decent first half but the second was a little bit scruffy," Cullen told BBC Radio Merseyside. "At 34-0 at half time the game was done and dusted. But I'm just glad we've been able to get on the field and get a game under our belt." Cullen said the only down side to the night was his side's wayward goal kicking - a situation he is keen to see resolved. "We lost a lot of our goal kickers for one reason or another at the back end of last year," continued Cullen. "Although I think we have made some good signings, none of those signings are accomplished goal kickers in their own right. "The goal kicks weren't missing by a mile and a lot of them were from the touchline, so we'll plug away at that and try and develop those young players."
