Knights progress in Challenge Cup

York City Knights

York City Knights went through to the fourth round of the Challenge Cup after a 50-10 win over Wigan St Patricks from the National Conference.

The Knights scored 26 points in the first 20 minutes and 10 tries overall, two coming from John Oakes.

But Knights' director of rugby James Ratcliffe told BBC Radio York that the performance was not one of their best.

"From our point of view it wasn't a very competent performance," he said. "It wasn't what we were looking for."

Ratcliffe gave credit to the Wigan amateurs for their performance.

"I think they've done a really good job in what they've done today," he told BBC Radio York.

"The things that we were looking at, some of them came through at some stages of the game but defensively we weren't at our best.

"Once again when we had ball in hand and we went 26 points up we decided we wanted to change our game plan and they're the things we want to get out of our game.

"We scored five good tries rolling the ball forward like they'd been told to do and then their own agenda comes in. It's not the things we want to be doing here.

"It would be right to say we had a few harsh words to say at half-time which hopefully stuck. We did look a bit more competent in the second half.

"But great credit to St Pats, I thought their defence was admirable under a lot of pressure.

"We got through a game that we didn't get through last year so it's a push forward from last season."

The draw for the fourth round is on Monday 9 March (2005 GMT).
