The signing of Ryles is a major coup for the Dragons |
Catalans Dragons have secured the services of former Australia Test prop Jason Ryles. The 29-year-old St George Illawarra forward has agreed a three-year contract with the Perpignan club and will join up with them next year. He will replace ex-New Zealand prop Alex Chan, who has announced he is to retire at the end of the season. "His experience at the highest level will be beneficial to all the team," said general manager Christophe Levy. "Following Alex Chan's decision to leave at the end of the season, we were looking for a big strong front rower and Jason soon became our priority." The capture of Ryles follows Tuesday's signing of Australian centre Steve Bell. At 6ft 4in and 18st 10lb, Ryles is one of the biggest men in rugby league. | 606: DEBATE |
He won 15 caps from 2001-05 and made eight State of Origin appearances for New South Wales. Ryles has two years left on a three-year contract with St George Illawarra. But he has been told by incoming coach Wayne Bennett that he is free to leave. "I am looking forward to joining the Catalans Dragons in 2009," he said. "The club is doing really well and I look forward to being a part of it going forward." Ryles is the second player signed by Kevin Walters, who will succeed Mike Potter as head coach at the end of the season. Potter said: "It is a fantastic signing for Catalans. He will replace Alex Chan, who has done a great job on and off the field for the club over the last three years. "Jason will help the club to go further and achieve its objectives." The 33-year-old Chan is set to make his 77th appearance for the club against Warrington at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium on Saturday.
