Mason won the man-of-the-match award in the NRL Grand Final |
Australia have picked four players from Canterbury's NRL championship-winning squad for the Tri-Nations series against Great Britain and New Zealand. Willie Mason, Andrew Ryan, Mark O'Meley and Willie Tonga have made the squad for the series which starts in Auckland on 16 October.
There are seven new caps, including former Leeds centre Tonie Carroll while Darren Lockyer has been named captain.
However Joel Clinton, Trent Waterhouse and Shaun Timmins have been left out.
The selection of four Canterbury players is a reward for their impressive season which culminated in the 16-13 Grand Final victory over the Sydney Roosters on Sunday. Mason claimed the Clive Churchill medal as the best player of the final.
The Roosters also have four players in the squad, Michael Crocker, Craig Fitzgibbon, Anthony Minichiello and Craig Wing while Brisbane have six players.
Broncos utility back Carroll last appeared on the international stage four years ago for New Zealand but qualifies for both countries.
"There's a great sense of responsibility picking these players for their country," said Australia coach Wayne Bennett.
"I always feel it has to be earned and they have earned their positions, but you don't want to get it wrong.
"Great Britain obviously fancy themselves, too. I think it's going to be a wonderful competition."
Britain, Australia and New Zealand play each other twice before the Tri-Nations final at Elland Road on 27 November.
