Baldwin won the downhill and giant slalom at 2010's junior championships |
Norfolk skier TJ Baldwin says he is relishing the experience of his first senior World Championships. The 20-year-old giant slalom and super combined British number one is in Garmisch, Germany, where he has already performed in the Super G. He told BBC Radio Norfolk: "It's the hardest competition I've taken part in, it's a step forward I needed to take. "Hopefully one day I'll be one of the people others look up to and be one of the best in the world." After failing to finish in the Super G, Baldwin will take to the slopes in the downhill on Saturday, super combined on Monday and finally the giant slalom a week on Friday. And despite being the youngest member of the Great Britain team in Germany, Norwich-born Baldwin is feeling confident. "I think my time has come now, I've proved I'm Britain's number one GS and super combined skier, so I've definitely got a good shot at getting a title in those," he said. | It would be a great help if UK Sport put some in towards us. "I think I've caught up the gap between me and the others now, I think this could be a good championship for me." While fighting for ranking points on the slopes Baldwin's other battle involves finding backers to fund his skiing. He receives no funding from UK Sport and relies on sponsorship from two local companies and a grant from the Norfolk Sports and Cultural Foundation. "It would be a great help if UK Sport put some in towards us," he said. "We're young guys, it's not really possible for us to work and earn our money. "It's always hard to get our own personal funding, so it would make a huge difference."
