Norwich City academy boss Ricky Martin has challenged the club's youngsters to match the winning mentality of Paul Lambert's first team.

A young City side lost 2-1 to Dereham Town in the semi-final of the Norfolk Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

And Martin has urged his charges to show more ruthlessness.

"You've got to find a way of winning the game and that's what we're trying to create at the club," he told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"We've seen the first team doing that and that's fantastic, these young men, if they want to do it, have got to learn a way and do it quickly."

There was better news for the Canaries as midfielder Andrew Surman got 68 minutes under his belt as he steps up his recovery from a knee injury.

The 24-year-old has been out since early December after suffering a recurrence of a problem which started in September.

Martin said: "12 weeks out is a long time and what you don't want to do is to try and force things, or try a little bit too much and maybe go into a tackle and then consequently get a knock.

"It was a great 70 minutes and it was good for him to come out after half-time to show he can continue, I'm sure he will be back around the first-team squad from now on."

Meanwhile, Dereham will face either King's Lynn or Thetford in the final, but manager Matt Henman will spend some time revelling in his side's victory at Carrow Road.

"Being selfish, it's probably the best feeling I've had in football," he said.

"I'm a massive Norwich fan and it's the first time I've managed or played in a side in a competitive game at Carrow Road.

"It makes up for all the years I've not made it here. It's a double whammy, beating Norwich and getting to a final."
