Clemens sticks with Yankees
New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens
Clemens is third on the all-time strikeout list
New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens has extended his contract for another year in a $10.1m deal.

The 40 year old is the only baseball player to have won the Cy Young award - given to the league's best pitcher - six times.

In his four seasons with the Yankees, "the Rocket" has a record of 60-27 and has helped them to two World Series wins.

Last year, the hard-throwing right-hander went 13-6 with an ERA of 4.35, leaving him just seven wins short of becoming the 21st pitcher to reach the 300-win mark.

He ranks third on the all-time strikeout list with 3,909, behind Steve Carlton (4,136) and Nolan Ryan (5,714).

"The importance of Roger Clemens to our pitching staff can not be overstated, so it's great to have him back," said Yankees manager Joe Torre.

"Roger's work ethic is second to none and he is a great example to other pitchers, both young and experienced.

"Even at his age and with all of his accomplishments, he continues to adjust and work at bettering himself along the way."

The Yankees now have a glut of starting pitchers in their bullpen, including Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, David Wells, Jeff Weaver, Orlando Hernandez and Sterling Hitchcock.

They also recently signed Cuban Jose Contreras on a four-year $32m deal.

But Hernandez and Hitchcock could well be sold before the new season.
