Don's hopes were hit by a puncture |
Victories for juniors Alistair Brownlee and Hollie Avil helped Britain top the medal table at the European Triathlon Championships in Copenhagen. Andrea Whitcombe was the best British female elite racer, five seconds off the podium in fourth place.
World Under-23 champion Will Clarke finished 12th among the men.
World champion Tim Don suffered a puncture during the cycle stage and could only finish 18th, with Spain's Javier Gomez the winner.
"If I hadn't punctured I would have been in the thick of it," said Don. "I'm totally gutted and very frustrated.
"There was no way I could have got on the podium having started the run so far down."
Avil led the field throughout the 1500m swim and stretched her lead in to the bike leg.
Brownlee dropped off the back of the group when he clipped a crowd barrier exiting the water
But he regained control to pass defending champion Aurelein Raphael during the run leg.
