Simpson said the lacklustre performance had been a wake-up call |
Guernsey squash player Chris Simpson says his mental attitude cost him in the Baltimore Cup semi-final. The 23-year-old is now preparing for a three-star event in Rotterdam, after being knocked out of the $10,000 event on Saturday. Simpson lost 3-0 to Adrian Waller, the world number 56. The world number 51 said: "I played a really bad match, mentally I just wasn't there. I gave my opponent far too many cheap points." Simpson came to the tournament off the back of winning a competition in Vancouver, Canada. | This tournament is a bit bigger than the last two I have played |
"It's a big disappointment as I really would have liked to have won this week too," he added. "It highlights the sort of mental strength that I need to develop to be able to back-up match after match. "I felt fine physically, which is good news, but didn't realise how much I had stepped off it mentally until I got on court." Simpson has been drawn against sixth-seed Simon Rosner of Germany in the first round of the $30,000 Dutch Open. He said: "This tournament is a bit bigger than the last two I have played, so this has made me really want to perform well there."
