Von Gruenigen wins in Korea
Michael von Gruenigen
Michael von Gruenigen won the World Cup men's giant slalom in Yongpyong, South Korea, on Saturday.

The Swiss skier finished with a combined time of two minutes 26.68 seconds to increase his lead at the top of the overall standings.

Frederic Covili of France was second in 2:26.85 and American Bode Miller was third in 2:27.00.

Von Gruenigen reversed the positions of the first leg where he finished 0.21 secs behind Covili.

It was the third giant slalom victory of the season and the 23rd World Cup triumph for the Swiss champion.

"It was very tough, but very good," he said after the race. "I am very pleased."

The race was delayed by an hour because of an overnight dusting of snow on Yongpyong's Rainbow Run.

The fast course proved difficult for all of the skiers.

"It was insane," said Miller. "I hope it is a little bit better for the slalom. When you are up there you are going very fast."

Elsewhere, former world champion Sonja Nef's season is over after she tore a ligament in her knee during training in Austria, Austrian news agency APA reported on Saturday.

The Swiss giant slalom champion from 2001, whose career has been plagued by serious knee injuries, will be out of action for six months.
