Maier can resume training in one month |
Austria's Hermann Maier will be out of action for a month after an operation to remove a surgical pin from his leg. Maier injured his right leg in a motorcycle accident in August 2001 near his home town of Flachau and it was feared at the time that he may face amputation.
Instead, Maier - nicknamed The Herminator - underwent surgery to reconstruct the limb.
And he has now gone under the knife again to remove the 36cm pin which doctors fitted during the initial operation.
The double Olympic champion made an amazing comeback from the injury last month, winning a World Cup super-G in Kitzbuhel.
The 30-year-old, who was the dominant force in the sport for four years, also took a silver medal earlier this month at the World Championships in St Moritz.
However, Maier decided to end his season early to have the surgery, giving himself time to train thoroughly for next season, which begins in October.
Maier's doctor Artur Trost said that the Austrian would be able to resume training within the next four weeks.
"The operation wasn't easy, but everything went very well and Hermann is back in fine fettle," he said.
