Zanzibar takes Alderney pursuit

Jersey yacht Zanzibar
Zanzibar won after starting second from the back

Jersey yacht Zanzibar, skippered by Alan Stevens, won the annual Pursuit Race to Alderney at the weekend.

The fleet, made up of 38 yachts from Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and the UK started at staggered intervals, based on recognised handicaps.

The fastest boats completed the course in a little over two hours despite strong winds and heavy rain.

"The pursuit race format worked out well for us this year, ensuring a tense finish," said organiser Adam Reed.

The pursuit race format, in theory, ensures that boats arrive at the finish at the same time, and so it proved in Alderney with half the fleet arriving within seconds of each other.

Zanzibar skipper Alan Steven said: "The crew and I were particularly pleased to win as we are the first Jersey boat to do so.

"The driving rain was not nice but the wind direction and strength suited us well and we managed to overhaul the rest of the fleet who (with one exception) had all started ahead of us on handicap."
