Coventry Blaze beat Hull Stingrays 3-2 in overtime

Blaze players celebrate Greg Owen's match-winner in overtime

Greg Owen scored an overtime winner to end Coventry Blaze's run of five defeats with a 3-2 victory over Hull.

Last year's Elite League champions had suffered back-to-back defeats in Belfast prior to the Skydome match.

Captain Jonathan Weaver gave Blaze the lead in the first period before they lost Brad Cruikshank to a match penalty in the second.

Aaron Nell scored inbetween Jereme Tendler's efforts for Stingrays before Owen clinched both points.

Blaze coach Paul Thompson told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: "We don't make life easy for ourselves. We took seven or eight indiscipline minors - selfish minors.

"Cruikshank's got to smarten up. I'm not having people do that in my team."

On Friday night Blaze were beaten 5-2 by the Giants and followed that up with a 4-1 loss the following night.

The second of those defeats was Thompson's 1,000th game in charge of Blaze and he added: "It's been a long road to get here and right now we're on a road that's as testing as it's ever been on the ice.

"As a coach you're forever learning. You learn every game, every week and every practice.

"We've had things not go our way this year and it's taught me a lot."
