Blaze players celebrate their title win at the Skydome on Sunday night |
Coventry Blaze secured their fourth Elite League championship in six years after winning 4-3 in overtime at Edinburgh Capitals. Captain Adam Calder scored a hat-trick, while Brad Cruikshank netted too. Coventry were trailing 3-2 with just 28 seconds left but Calder then equalised, before netting the overtime winner. "Without Adam Calder, this club would not have won what it has won," Blaze coach Paul Thompson told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire. "I am ecstatic, a fourth title in six years. "We might not play pretty hockey but we fill our trophy cabinet and our fans were brilliant." The Blaze then celebrated their title success in front of their own crowd on Sunday when they faced rivals Belfast Giants. But they could not finish the season with a flourish, losing 6-4 at the Skydome Arena. The Blaze goals came from Greg Owen, Luke Fulghum, Brian Lee and Cruikshank.
