Paul Thompson is on the verge of his fourth Elite League title |
Coventry Blaze are on the verge of becoming Elite League champions after thrashing Edinburgh Capitals 6-1 at the Skydome Arena on Thursday night. The Blaze, who are three points clear at the top, need one more victory from their remaining two games. Coventry head coach Paul Thompson told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire, "I thought it was the best we played in four or five weeks." Coventry now travel to Scotland to face the Capitals on Saturday night. Victory for Thompson's side would see the Elite League trophy head to Coventry for the fourth time in six years. Blaze then host Belfast on Sunday to round off their regular season campaign. | Adam Calder gave a captain's performance with a hat-trick |
Belfast are still in contention at the top. They must beat Newcastle at home on Saturday, and hope Coventry lose to Edinburgh to stand a chance going into Sunday's final game at the Skydome. The slim title hopes of the Nottingham Panthers were ended with Coventry's victory on Thursday. Captain Adam Calder scored a hat-trick in the 6-1 victory, with Brad Cruikshank, Danny Stewart and Aaron Nell also finding the net. "I thought we put in a solid performance and Adam Calder gave a captain's performance with a hat-trick," added Thompson. Coventry could be without Tom Watkins on Saturday due to suspected concussion.
