Yorkshire's Lyth passes 1,000 runs as Warwickshire toil

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Yorkshire 325-4
Yorkshire 3pts, Warwickshire 1pt
Match scorecard

Yorkshire batsman Adam Lyth
Left-hander Lyth now has 1,066 first-class runs this season

Yorkshire opener Adam Lyth became the first man to pass 1,000 first-class runs this season as the Tykes made Warwickshire toil at Headingley.

After the hosts lost Jacques Rudolph for a duck, Lyth (84) shared 148 with Anthony McGrath (57).

Neil Carter (3-63) accounted for both men before Gerard Brophy (92 no) and Jonathan Bairstow (44) added 100.

When Bairstow fell, Adil Rashid joined Brophy for an unbroken stand of 69 to take Yorkshire to 325-4 at stumps.

Rudolph, taking charge of the Tykes while Andrew Gale is with England Lions, won the toss and elected to bat but then edged Carter to Rikki Clarke at slip in the third over of the day.

Lyth was joined by McGrath to weather the new-ball storm and passed the 1,000-run mark when he drove Boyd Rankin through the covers for two to reach 18.

The hosts moved to 119-1 at lunch but Carter caused more problems after the break and was rewarded when McGrath edged to Darren Maddy at slip and Lyth, who was dropped by Maddy, fell lbw.

Bairstow and Brophy steadied the ship but their fourth-wicket stand was ended when Steffan Piolet trapped Bairstow leg before to claim his maiden first-class wicket.

Brophy found another reliable partner in Rashid (29 no) and was closing in on a seventh first-class century at the close.

Yorkshire batsman Adam Lyth:
"I was delighted to become the first player to reach 1,000 runs this season and hopefully there will be more to come.

"It was nice to get to 84 but I am still looking for my first century in a home match.

"I didn't get to play too much first class cricket last year and Andrew Gale has helped me to improve my confidence by giving me the chance to open the innings. He is a good captain who wants us to play good attacking cricket."

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Clive Eakin:
"A tough day for Warwickshire in the end although there were spells during which they looked to be getting back into the game.

"Between lunch and tea Rikki Clarke and Neil Carter kept Yorkshire's batsmen tied down but by the end of the day Yorkshire were well on top again.

"It's going to be a big test for the Bears troubled batsmen. This is the best pitch they've played on for some time but they could be responding to a huge total.

"It was a special day for Steffan Piolet, claiming his maiden Championship wicket when he had Jonathan Bairstow lbw.

"The 21-year-old Surrey-born player showed some of the promise he's already displayed in Twenty20 cricket."
