Nottingham Panthers skipper Danny Meyers hails spirit
Meyers is a Great Britain international
Skipper Danny Meyers says Sunday's win over title rivals Coventry proves Nottingham Panthers have the spirit to challenge for Elite League glory.
Panthers won 3-1 to move a point clear of Coventry at the top of the table, although Blaze have two games in hand.
A series of shock defeats in December and early January seemed to have ruled Panthers out of contention.
But Meyers told BBC Radio Nottingham: "The pressure was on and it showed we had a bit of bottle."
A delighted Meyers added: "That is the best word to sum up our performance - bottle.
"In the first period you expect them to put you under pressure and they did. From the second period we really did start getting into the game.
"It helped that we won here at the start of the season so we knew how to win here and obviously we had guys that won here last season so we could draw on that experience - we knew that it was a huge, huge battle.
"It was a real good professional performance. There were 16 heroes out there."
And Meyers is convinced this side have what it takes to win the title.
"Winning cups and winning play-offs are great and that is high on our priorities," he said.
"But we want to win the league, the fans want the league and the organisation want the league and if we keep putting on performances like this then who knows we might even pick it up."
