Blaz Emersic was one of two Jets imports to find the net in the shoot-out
Slough Jets scraped to an enthralling penalty shots victory over Peterborough Phantoms following a 4-4 draw between the sides at the Hangar.
Two early third period goals gave the Phantoms a brief 3-2 lead, but Slough roared back in front before James Hutchinson levelled late on.
Overtime proved unable to separate the two sides, so the game progressed to a sudden death shoot-out.
Peterborough's Joe Miller missed the net to hand Slough the points.
The game will live long in the memory as a classic encounter, but neither coach will be keen to remember aspects of the play.
Both teams had defensive frailties exposed on a regular basis, setting up extended periods of end-to-end play with barely a stoppage.
Yet it took until the last minute of the first period for Jets veteran Steve Moria to open the scoring with a close-range finish.
Peterborough responded just seven seconds into the second period through Nathan Rempel, but Slough again headed into the break with a goal advantage, Joe Ciccarello's cool finish capping a superb move.
Goaltenders Dean Skinns (Slough) and Euan King (Peterborough) had been winning most of their battles until this point, but the dam burst in the third period.
Within four minutes the Phantoms had transformed the game, Brent Gough and Craig Peacock punishing the sluggish Jets.
Moria scored his second of the night to level the game at 3-3, then Ciccarello earned his brace with another fine individual goal to give Slough the advantage.
But James Hutchinson, on the power play, hauled the Phantoms back into the game with four minutes left.
Five minutes of four-on-four overtime came and went, reducing the thrilling saga to penalty shots.
Skinns produced a save to spare Slough player-coach Moria's blushes following his miss, but Phantoms' Miller had no such luck, running the puck too far and watching his half-shot coast wide to send the home fans wild.
