Jets win opening games in style

Player-coach Steve Moria scored an opening day hat-trick

Slough Jets took maximum points from the opening weekend of the English Premier League ice hockey season to begin their campaign in style.

A hat-trick from veteran player-coach Steve Moria guided the Jets to a 6-3 win over Telford Tigers on Saturday.

An impressive league debut from Lewis Burke saw the 18-year-old pick up a goal and the man of the match award.

The Jets followed that home win with a 3-1 victory at Sheffield Scimitars on Sunday, Burke scoring again.

Saturday's game at the Hangar was largely a tight affair despite Slough ultimately recording a convincing score-line.

Telford's James Knight opened the scoring short-handed with less than a minute gone, but the Tigers were guilty of squandering beautiful build-up play with poor finishing and wasted opportunities.

At the other end, Slough soon made the away side pay for a number of defensive lapses.

Moria, 47, tidied up into an empty net following a goalmouth scramble to equalise, and Joe Ciccarello handed Slough the lead in similar circumstances.

Moria's second of the night, turned into the net off Tigers goaltender Davey Lawrence, sent Slough 3-1 up towards the end of the first period.

Both teams scored twice in the second period, Jason Cassells and Jake Armstrong finding the net for Telford, only to see their goals cancelled out by Blaz Emersic and Moria, the Canadian sealing his hat-trick with a fine finish.

Lewis Burke, at 5ft 8in a diminutive, lively threat for Slough all evening, scored the only goal of the third period to complete the win.

The only sour note for the Jets was the loss of youngster Curtis Platt, who was handed a five-plus-game penalty - equivalent to a dismissal in football - for high sticking, catching Telford's Scott Williams in the face and drawing blood.

Having left Berkshire in the early hours of Sunday to reach Sheffield for a lunchtime face-off, Slough raced to a two-goal advantage by the end of the first period, Michael Bowman and Moria the scorers.

The Scimitars struck back in the second period to reduce the deficit to one, but Burke completed a fine opening weekend of his Jets career, adding a third for Slough midway through the final period.

Fellow Berkshire team the Bracknell Bees enjoyed an initial spell of dominance in their Saturday game before capitulating against title favourites the Guildford Flames.

Peter Jasik handed the Bees the advantage at the Spectrum, although the goal was credited to new Canadian import Jeff Hutchins.

However, the Flames fought back with a hat-trick from captain Rick Plant, following an equaliser from Taras Foremsky.

Bees fans did not have to wait long to see the team register their first win of the season.

On Sunday, Bracknell demolished Wightlink Raiders 8-2, Jasik and Hutchins both notching a brace in the rout.
