Stars happy to stay at Phantoms

Ice hockey

Peterborough director of ice hockey Jon Kynaston has said the club had no difficulty in persuading four of their star players to re-join the club.

Last week forwards Maris Ziedins, Nathan Rempel and Brent Gough all agreed new deals for next season along with defenceman Dwayne Newman.

"It was easy agreeing [with them] that they wanted to stay," Kynaston told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"They love Peterborough, they love the fans and the way the club is run."

He added: "They couldn't say enough good things about wanting to come back and come September it'll be about what they can deliver on the ice."

Kynaston said the continuity would be important as the Phantoms look to improve on last season, when they falied to qualify from their play-off group.

"If you look back over the last four or five years, the teams that have been successful are the teams that have had a bit of time with a group of players or have very experienced players and I think we've got both.

"We've got a very good coach so the building blocks are there for a good season and let's hope it turns out that way."
