Malton-trained two-year-old Wootton Bassett has won the Yorkshire horse of the year award at York Racecourse. Trained by Richard Fahey and ridden by Paul Hanagan, the horse won all of his five races in 2010, the last a Group One race at Longchamp. Fahey was also top Yorkshire trainer with 66 winners in the county, while Hanagan was top jockey with 86 wins. "To have a Group One winner with Wootton Bassett was great," Hanagan told BBC Radio York. "I think Wootton Bassett is going to go for the (2000) Guineas, and I'm really looking forward to that," Hanagan added. "I think the horse will probably be better next year, so that's quite exciting." The award added further glory to Hanagan's year, in which he became Champion Jockey, holding off Richard Hughes by just two winners. Having led from the very first day of the campaign at Doncaster in March when he rode a four-timer, Hanagan needed 191 winners to take the trophy. The Malton-based 30-year-old is only the second jockey from the north of England to win the title in the last 100 years, the other being Sheriff Hutton-based Kevin Darley.
