Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson both had promising careers ahead of them |
Jockeys riding at York on Sunday will wear black arm bands to mark the first anniversary of the deaths of apprentices Jan Wilson and Jamie Kyne. Wilson, 19, and Kyne, 18, died in an arson attack at a block of flats in Malton, North Yorkshire last September. York Racecourse marketing manager James Brennan told BBC Radio York: "We're conscious that many in the weighing room knew them best. "They will wear black arm bands as a mark of respect throughout the day." Kyne was attached to the Malton stables of John Quinn and had won 29 races last season. Wilson was with David Barron's stables, also in Malton. | A year on still the pain will be very acute for many people |
Brennan added: "We're mindful that certainly for the racing world and obviously for the families and those that knew Jamie and Jan it's a particularly poignant day. "Last year it was just as the news was breaking that we raced on the Sunday and we observed a minutes silence and took pause for thought on that occasion. "A year on still the pain will be very acute for many people. "William Derby our chief executive and and clerk of the course, is going to go and pay his respects as part of the memorial service up at Malton in the morning. "On the race card we hope to do a positive feature on the work that's been done by the foundation that's been set up by so many people who wanted to do something positive out of the tragic circumstances of last September."
