Schiaparelli was the 6-4 favourite for victory |
The Frankie Dettori-ridden favourite Schiaparelli struck for Godolphin with a fine performance to win the Coutts Goodwood Cup on Thursday. Dettori kicked on over half a mile out and the six-year-old held off the late surge of Mourilyan. The Betchworth Kid, the 33-1 outsider, was a long way back in third. "This fellow is a good horse. It's his first try over this trip and he stayed well and he won like a nice stayer," said Dettori. "I had a little look and I saw Ryan (Moore) behind me, but my horse wasn't slowing down so I thought he'd be very hard to get past. "He's very versatile as he stays well and a mile and a half in soft ground is fine for him. He can do both." | 606: DEBATE |
Simon Crisford, racing manager for Godolphin, added: "He had been off the track for a while but ran well on his first start this season at Newmarket. "We entered him in this race to see what it looked like. It looked winnable, so we decided to run. "He will now go back to a mile and a half for his next race, which will probably be in Baden-Baden in early September." Elsewhere Sevenna (12-1) ground out victory over a mile-and-three-quarters in the Group Three Moet Hennessy Fillies' Stakes. Jockey Tom Queally took the Henry Cecil-trained filly to the front two furlongs out after Victoria Montoya had gone on early in the straight. Sevenna appeared to tire close to home but held off Cassique Lady by a length-and-a-half, with Victoria Montoya plugging on for third place, another neck behind. "She really tried and loves that ground," said Queally. "Our horses are only just beginning to come to themselves and she's no exception. "Her guts and determination showed where it mattered." Meanwhile, the David Simcock-trained Suruor ran out a narrow winner of the XL Insurance Stakes. The three-year-old was given a patient ride by Jimmy Fortune, who gradually allowed his mount to make ground on the leaders up the straight. Once a gap came between horses, the 9-2 chance was more than willing to take it. Suruor galloped right to the line to hold off Shamwari Lodge, the 4-1 favourite, by three-quarters of a length. Akhenaten (12-1) was further back in third.
