Spectait (right) gets up to edge out Dunelight |
Spectait got up to beat 7-2 favourite Dunelight in the Totesport Mile on the penultimate day of Glorious Goodwood. The 9-2 shot, ridden by Seb Sanders, overhauled Philip Robinson's Dunelight just before the winning post after a long battle up the home straight.
Outsider Prince of Thebes came out of the chasing pack to take third at 66-1 with Sir Gerard in fourth at 13-2.
The winner, who was trained by handicap specialist Sir Mark Prescott, set a new course record of 1 minute 35.61 secs.
Spectait made headway from three furlongs out to throw down a challenge to the front-running Dunelight but it was not well inside the final furlong that the winner got on top to score by half a length.
After dismounting from his third winner at the meeting, Sanders said: "He's always promised to be a good horse but to be honest, we've probably been a little bit disappointed with him - although he has never gone down without putting in a good performance.
"It was really pleasing to go and win a nice prize like this.
"I was fighting him trying to keep him straight and when I stopped fighting him and let him drift he found another length."
Trainer Clive Cox was delighted with the performance of runner-up Dunelight.
"I can't be disappointed with that - in fact I'm over the moon but I suspect his days in handicaps are numbered.
"I think we will be looking at Listed options for him."
Oscar Urbina, who rode Sir Gerard, was banned for one day (15 August) after he was found guilty of careless riding in that he caused interference to Eden Rock approaching the furlong marker.
