It was Court Masterpiece's first win of the season |
Court Masterpiece landed a deserved Group One success when he captured the Sussex Stakes on the second day of Glorious Goodwood. The Ed Dunlop-trained six-year-old was an unlucky second in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
But he made amends at his favourite track Goodwood, where he has now won four times in eight starts.
In a fast-run race, Echo of Light set the early pace before 11-10 favourite Araafa took up the running two furlongs out. As the front two tired, Jimmy Fortune switched Court Masterpiece to the far rails and powered to the line.
Popular mare Soviet Song, who won the race in 2004 and was runner-up last year, ran on well to finish second once again in the 300,000 contest.

And Rob Roy also came from a long way back to finish third.
Court Masterpiece landed the seven-furlong Betfair Cup at this meeting last year before going on to land his first victory in top-flight company in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp.
"He's very good round here and he's won like a very good horse," winning trainer Dunlop told BBC Sport.
"I think the key is that Court Masterpiece can quicken so well and, off a decent pace, he quickened when a gap came nicely for him.
"He kept on well so the myth about him not staying a mile has gone forever.
"I'd like to take him to America for the Breeders' Cup Mile - he would be a companion for Ouija Board - but we'll take him home and have a think."
It was a disappointing display from Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James' Palace Stakes winner Araafa, who had been attempting to win his third consecutive Group One race.
His trainer Jeremy Noseda said: "He just did not fire and we are all entitled to an off-day. We will be back."
