Dettori and Godolphin are back in form |
Iffraaj romped home in the feature race on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood, the Group Two Betfair Cup. The 6-4 favourite, ridden by Frankie Dettori, made his move two furlongs out and led home Jedburgh at 40-1 and 33-1 shot Assertive by four lengths.
Nayyir, ridden by John Egan and winner in 2002 and 2003, finished fourth.
The win was part of a treble for Dettori, who also cruised home on 7-4f Sixties Icon in the BGC Gordon Stakes and won the last race on Chataway.
Victory in the big race continued the overdue return to form of the Godolphin operation, who have had a glut of winners in the past fortnight after a poor start to the season.
Dettori told the BBC: "I expected there would be more pace in the race. They went very slow for the first three furlongs.

"When I asked him to go I thought we'd better nick as much as we can now as the others would be flying at the end.
"He dug deep and really went clear of the field. He's redeemed himself after an unlucky run in the July Cup.
"He comes into his own when he runs over seven furlongs. There was something there at the end so he could get a mile. He's a solid horse."
Simon Crisford, manager of the Godolphin stables, said: "He is a very powerful colt, he's got tons of class and showed his superiority.
"He's got an entry in the Haydock Sprint Cup and the Celebration Mile, and the Breeders' Cup Mile could be a target.
"He is owned by Sheikh Ahmed so we will be talking to him and looking through the programme for all races over six furlongs to a mile."
Second favourite Jeremy proved the disappointment of the race, the Royal Ascot winner weakening tamely under Mick Kinane to trail in sixth.
In the Group Three BGC Stakes, Sixties Icon made sure he will go into next month's St Leger as favourite after an impressive win.
The Jeremy Noseda-trained colt won by a length and three-quarters from Jadalee, who stayed on to claim second spot by half a length from Linas Selection.
