Motivator stormed to victory in a lightning-quick Vodafone Derby, the highlight of a packed day of racing at Epsom. The 3-1 Michael Bell-trained favourite destroyed the field to win by five lengths from Walk in the Park and hand jockey Johnny Murtagh his third victory in the race.
Fourteen runners had been due to start, but the Brian Meehan-trained First Row, a 100-1 outsider, was withdrawn at the last minute when he injured a hock in the stalls.
Frankie Dettori had been bidding to break his Derby duck on Godolphin's Dubawi, but he had to settle for third place.
Motivator's triumph sparked widespread scenes of celebration at the racecourse and the 230 members of the Royal Ascot Racing Club - who jointly own the horse - roared with delight when he strolled into the winners' enclosure.
The seven-race card kicked off with a victory for Enforcer, ridden by Martin Dwyer, with BA Foxtrot and Chris Catlin winning race two.
Hazyview, ridden by Darryll Holland, charged to victory in race three while 14-1 shot Fire up the Band, with Richard Hughes aboard, took the 1530 Dash.
Kieron Fallon, who missed out on a third straight success in the blue ribbon race, got some consolation when he rounded off the day with a double.
Fallon guided the 9-2 favourite Crow Wood first-past-the-post in the penultimate Handicap, then landed top honours in the final race of the day.
