BBC Television Clare Balding Clare Balding is a regular anchor on BBC Grandstand but horse racing remains her specialist sport. A former leading amateur Flat jockey and champion lady rider, she began her BBC career with Radio 5 in 1993, presenting the racing bulletin on Danny Baker's Morning Edition. She was appointed as the BBC's TV racing presenter in December 1997, following the retirement of Julian Wilson. She has also reported for Five Live's Sportsweek and BBC TV's Onside, and was part of the TV team at the Sydney Olympics. Richard Pitman A former top jockey, Richard Pitman has worked for Grandstand since 1975 as a paddock commentator, analyst and feature presenter. He enjoyed plenty of success as a jockey but will always be remembered for getting pipped at the Grand National post twice in his riding career. The most famous occasion came in 1973 when Red Rum caught his mount Crisp on the run-in. Pitman's son Mark was also a jump jockey and is now a National Hunt trainer. Peter Scudamore The eight-time former champion National Hunt jockey retired from professional riding in 1993. His big race wins include the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. He was the first jump jockey to ride over 200 winners in a season and is the third most successful of all time in terms of career victories. Peter spent a period as assistant-trainer to Nigel Twiston-Davies training horses and now occupies the same position for Denis Caro. His father Michael was also a top jockey and his son Tom is beginning to make a name for himself in the saddle after turning professional at the beginning of last season. Angus Loughran
The BBC's betting expert began his broadcasting career in 1986 commentating for Ladbrokes. After that, he commentated on football for a range of broadcasters as well as turning his hand to husky racing, indoor rock climbing and ballroom dancing. Then he became a household name as Statto on Frank Skinner and David Baddiel's Fantasy Football show. He is now a firm fixture in the betting ring at all BBC-televised meetings, covering all the market moves. Jim McGrath The BBC's senior racing commentator since 1997, Jim started commentating for BBC TV in 1993, working with the legendary Sir Peter O'Sullivan. McGrath's father was a bookie and his mother trained horses, so racing has always been in his blood. Originally from Melbourne, Jim then moved to Hong Kong in 1973 where he started commentating for the local television before moving to the UK. He has been the Daily Telegraph's racing correspondent since 1991. Radio Five Live Cornelius Lysaght Five Live's racing correspondent, Lysaght turned his hobby into a profession when he commentated for Racecall before joining the BBC in 1990. A keen racegoer away from work, he also owns interests in several horses. For the last decade, he has kept listeners informed with clear and distinctive reporting. Lysaght is also a columnist for BBC Sport Online, giving an insight into the issues behind the headlines. Luke Harvey A former jump jockey, Harvey rode over 250 winners in his career including victories at the Welsh National and Cheltenham Festival. He still keeps his hand in riding horses for a number of trainers and is also a presenter for the Racing Channel. He is the reporter for Radio Five Live, presenting regular slots on the Breakfast show. Lee McKenzie Having started in BBC local radio, Lee auditioned to become Radio Five Live's commentator at Lingfield Park in May 1981. His first commentary was alongside Peter Bromley at Newmarket in October 1981. His first solo outing came at Newmarket in August 1982. When Bromley retired in June, 2001, McKenzie was made senior racing commentator for BBC Radio Sport. | |
