Allan trains with Roland Long, several times national dressage champion

Lorraine Allan from St John in Jersey won her class at the UK Winter Dressage Championships at Hartpury Arena in Gloucestershire.

Riding Nouveau, her own 15-year-old Dutch-bred gelding, she beat 21 national finalists in the Novice Restricted Winter Championship.

"I was so pleased with him today," said a delighted Allan. "He's a great horse to train."

Nouveau is a grade A show-jumper, but has not jumped for two years.

"He's had to have time off and only came back into work about six months ago," Allan explained. "Since then he has done dressage only."

But that has helped, according to the Jersey rider. "Since giving up the show jumping, he's become a lot sharper which has helped."

And it's not going to stop there. "We're working towards elementary and medium next," said Allan.
