Norfolk is in the hunt for a third US Open title
Defending champion Peter Norfolk warmed up for Sunday's final of the US Open quad singles with a 6-4 5-7 7-6 (8-6) round-robin win over David Wagner. The pair will meet again in the final and Norfolk scored the first psychological point by inflicting Wagner's first defeat of the week. But the world number one, who hopes to win a third US Open title, was pushed all the way, saving four match points. He needed three himself before sealing victory in two hours and 16 minutes. The first set was full of breaks of serve, with the vital one coming in the 10th game, as Wagner started with a double fault, and Norfolk won it on the first of his three set points. The second set saw more of the same erratic serving, before Norfolk went 5-3 up and then had a match point at 5-4 and 40-30 up, but Wagner turned it round by rattling off four games in a row to take the match to the deciding set, which lasted 62 minutes. | It was another pressure match that I am happy to come through |
Wagner won three games in a row to go 3-1 up before Norfolk took the next three. Wagner saved three break points to level the set at 4-4 and then went 5-4 ahead, before having the first of four match points. Norfolk missed three chances to move 6-5 ahead, handing the initiative to Wagner, who failed to capitalise, and the match went to a final set tie-break, won by the Englishman. "It was a see-saw match and I lost my focus, which David capitalised on and he played very well," said Norfolk. "I was pleased to break back at 5-6 in the third and it was another pressure match that I am happy to come through. "It's the second time in a week I have had a tough three-set match against David and my recent fitness training has paid obvious dividends in both matches." Before the match, Norfolk had already secured his place in the final with a 6-1 6-0 win over American Nick Taylor. Wagner clinched his final spot by beating Sweden's Johan Andersson 6-1 6-4.
