Peter Norfolk opens up US Open title defence with win

Peter Norfolk began his US Open quad singles title defence with a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 victory over Johan Andersson at Flushing Meadows.

In the first of his three round-robin matches, 49-year-old Norfolk took a 4-1 lead before comfortably taking the first set three games later.

And the Briton brushed aside the Swedish world number two in the second set to wrap the match up in 58 minutes.

Norfolk faces world number four Nick Taylor in his second match on Thursday.

Taylor lost 6-1 6-0 to fellow American David Wagner in the day's other quad singles match.

Norfolk made his return to competitive tennis a few days ago at the US Open USTA event in St Louis after a break from the sport following the birth of his daughter Evie.

"I'm very pleased to get the first match under my belt and beat Johan, as he was the last player to beat me back in April before I took my paternity leave," said Norfolk, who competes in the division for players who have a disability in three or more limbs and plays with his racket taped to his hand.

"The wind was a bit more manageable today than it was yesterday and I am looking forward to my next match."
